DRAGON FRUIT COMES IN A VARIETY OF SPECIES, ALL OF WHICH COME FROM CACTI. OF THESE PLANTS SOME HAVE BOTH WATER RETENTION CAPABILITIES AND NEEDLE PROTECTION WHILE OTHERS ONLY CONTAIN THE WATER RETENTION ASPECT. MOREOVER, WHEN TILING I WANTED TO KEEP THE ORGANIC FLUIDITY OF THE FRUIT ITSELF WHILE ADDING THE PROTECTIVE QUALITY OF THE CACTI NEEDLE AND THE REACTIVE QUALITIES OF A VENUS FLY TRAP. ULTIMATELY REDESIGNING THE SKIN FOR ULTIMATE PROTECTION.

TENSION BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE NYPD IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH, NOT ONLY FOR BROWNSVILLE, NEW YORK BUT FOR COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE NATION. AS A RESULT THE NYPD HAVE COMMISSIONED TEACHERS AND STUDENTS FROM PRATT INSTITUTE TO ASSIST IN CREATING A “NEW FRONT DOOR”. AS A CLASS, WE HAVE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE COMMUNITY AND NYPD TO DESIGN A COMMUNITY PAVILION THAT MEETS THE NEEDS OFTHE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THAT OF THE NEW YORK POLICE DEPARTMENT. TECHNICAL DRAWINGS AND FABRICATION PENDING FUNDING.

USING FOUND MATERIALS OR OLD FURNITURE WE WERE TO CREATE A FUNCTIONING CHAIR USING MINIMAL ADDITIONS. I FOUND CRATE/VENT COVERINGS AND USED THREE UNIFORM 2X4’S TO CONNECT AND STABILIZE THE CREATES INTO A FUNCTIONING CHAIR. PART OF THE BOTTOM CRATE WAS REMOVED TO ALLOW FOR A SEAMLESS EXTENSION OF THE BOTTOM 2X4’S. THIS EXTENSION HELPED ESTABLISH A STRUCTURAL CENTER, COUNTERACTING ITS UNIQUE “Z” SHAPE.

HISTORY, ITS HOW WE LEARN, SO WHY ARE WE SO KEEN ON VISUALLY ERASING IT? IN ARCHITECTURE THERE ARE TWO STANDARD APPROACHES AFTER A DESIGN IS COMPLETE, RENOVATE OR RESTORE. THE ESTUARIUM PROGRAM ALLOWED FOR AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY TO DEVIATE FROM THESE TWO APPROACHES, USING LAYERS OF AGING TO ACT AS AN IDENTITY AND LEARNING TOOL FOR THE ESTUARIUM. THROUGH TEMPORAL EXPLOITATION, PIER 26 ESTUARIUM ENCOURAGES VISITOR CONTRIBUTION, MAXIMIZES EDUCATIONAL MOMENTS, AND BUILDS AN ONGOING RAPPORT WITH THE NEW YORK CITY COMMUNITY.
FORMALLY, THE DESIGN NEEDED TO MAXIMIZE SURFACE AREA TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH. FOR THE EXTERIOR, NOOKS WERE EXAGGERATED TO ENCOURAGE NATURAL HABITATION. ADDITIONALLY, CABLES DRAWN FROM THE GROUND TO ROOF OVERHANGS WERE PLACED STRATEGICALLY TO CREATE PROTECTIVE LAYERS OF INDIGENOUS GROWTH. THE STANDARD SHEETROCK WALL WAS ELIMINATED IN THIS DESIGN; EACH WALL CONSIST OF VARIED SHELVING, THE WALLS OF CURIOSITY. THESE WALLS ARE MADE TO CONTAIN; CONTAIN RESEARCH, EXPERIMENTS, SPECIMEN, AND EVEN VISITOR CONTRIBUTIONS. PORTIONS OF THE INTERIOR SHELVING SYSTEM PROTRUDE INTO THE EXTERIOR CREATING MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH AND HABITATION. ULTIMATELY, THE WALL OF CURIOSITY IS AN EVER GROWING TOOL FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING, BLURRING THE IDENTITIES BETWEEN INSIDE AND OUT, STUDENT AND TEACHER, ANDNATIVE AND TOURIST.
THIS COURSE EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NATURAL AND ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS IN THE CONTEXT OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES. IT IS A RESEARCH AND PRODUCTION SEMINAR, WHICH STUDIES STRUCTURES AND ORGANIZATIONS AS THEY OCCUR IN NATURE AT MULTIPLE SCALES, AND IT, UTILIZES GENERATIVE DESIGN AND FABRICATION TECHNIQUES TO ARRIVE AT INTRICATE ARCHITECTURAL ASSEMBLIES. THE EXPLORATION IS BASES ON THE STUDY OF RECENT ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY AND LINEAGE OF NATURALISTS, ENGINEERS AND DESIGNERS WHO PIONEERED ECOLOGICAL THINKING AND BUILDING.
AFTER AN IN-DEPTH EXPLORATION OF PATTERNS AND THEIR FUNCTION IN NATURE A FAMILY OF VESSELS WERE CREATED TO EXPLORE AND TEST THE LIMITATIONS OF ABSTRACTED PATTERNS AS THEY ARE PROJECTED ONTO THE VARIOUS FORMS.

MATHEMATICA IS AN ARITHMETIC PROGRAM USED TO INDICATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AN EQUATION AND ITS GRAPH. AS A CLASS WE WERE GIVEN A SERIES OF EQUATIONS AND THEIR 3D GRAPHIC COUNTERPARTS. WE WERE THEN INSTRUCTED TO INTRODUCE VARIATIONS WITHIN THE EQUATION TO INVESTIGATE NEW EQUATION/GRAPH RELATIONSHIPS. BY CHANGING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE ORIGINAL ALGORITHMS WE WERE ABLE TO REDEFINE THE GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION INTO NEW AND UNIQUE SHAPES, OUR MODULES. THESE SHAPES WOULD ESSENTIALLY BECOME OUR BUILDING BLOCKS TO OUR FINAL DESIGN. THROUGH EXTENSIVE PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL EXPERIMENTATION UNPRECEDENTED SPACES EVOLVED INTO A NEW TYPE OF ARCHITECTURE.

MANY MULTISTORY APARTMENT COMPLEXES USE DUPLICATION AND STACKING TO MAXIMIZE PROFIT. MAKING THE SPACE AN APARTMENT, NOT A HOME. WITHOUT A PERSONAL AND UNIQUE CONNECTION THE IDEA OF HIGH RISE LIVING CONTINUES TO FALL SHORT TO SUBURBIA. MOREOVER, AS LAND DISSIPATES BUILDING UP IS NECESSARY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. IT IS WITH THIS IDEA THAT I GENERATED THE DESIGN FOR THE “BUILDABLE FUTURE” PROJECT. COLLABORATING THE EFFICIENCY OF HIGH RISE LIVING AND THE IDEALS OF SUBURBIA.
THIS MULTISTORY RESIDENCE LOCATED IN HAMBURG, GERMANY IS A SMALL SCALE PROJECT IN TERMS OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. HOWEVER, THE BUILDING BLOCK APPROACH USED CAN EASILY TRANSLATE INTO A LARGER SCALE. FURTHERMORE, THIS SIX STORY COMPLEX FEATURES TWO OCCUPIABLE ROOFSCAPES, FIVE UNITS AND TWO COMMERCIAL SPACES.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PROJECT BEGAN WITH A SERIES OF CONCEPTUAL PARTI MODELS. WHERE I EXPLORED EFFICIENTLY STACKING DIFFERENT SIZE BOXES TO CREATE AN ARRAY OF UNIQUE SPACES. ULTIMATELY INFORMING THE “BUILDABLE FUTURE” PROJECT.

AS AN INTRODUCTION TO PLASTER MOLD MAKING WE WERE TO CHOOSE AN ITEM AND CREATE A TWO OR THREE PART MOLD. A TWO PART MOLD WAS CREATED TO REPRODUCE THREE COPIES OF THE PIPE THAT WOULD LATER BE PLACED INTO THE PACKAGING SHOWN. AFTER EXPLORATION AND TESTING OF VARIOUS MATERIALS THE FINAL THREE DUPLICATES WERE MADE OF BLACK AND WHITE WAX.
THE PIPE CASING IS MADE OF LAYERED BASS WOOD. ALONG WITH THE USE OF ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR AND LASER CUTTING TECHNOLOGY I CUT AND HOLLOWED OUT EIGHT 1/4” BASS WOOD PIECES. THESE LAYERS WERE THEN ADHERED AND SANDED TO CREATE STRIATIONS IN THE WOOD. WITH THE OBJECTIVE TO USE ONLY ONE MATERIAL, THE SLIDING LID WAS CREATED USING SIMILAR LAYERING TECHNIQUES.
